The coffee plant is an evergreen shrub athat belongs to the Coffea genus of the Rubiaceae family. The most widely cultivated species are Coffea arabica and the Coffea canephora, better known as Arabica and Robusta. Coffee flourishes between the tropics and is grown everywhere from mountain slopes to coastal areas, both in sunshine and shade.
Left untended, the plant can reach ten metres , in height whereas cultivated plants are limited to a maximum of three metres to make harvesting the beans easier.
Numerous varieties (typica, moka, maragogype) are cultivated from Coffea arabica, or Arabica. Originally from Ethiopia, it makes up around 75% of the world’s production. Robustaresults in a stronger, more full-bodied coffee.
